Description
Source: STC Database. A collection of theoretical and scholarly articles on different social issues. It was published by Valerii Chalidze, a human right activist and a member of Moscow Human Rights committee (together with Andrei Sakharov and Andrei Tverdokhlebov) in Moscow between August 1969 and February 1972. The periodical belongs to that strand of Soviet dissent that advocated openness of information and open challenge of the regime within the boundaries of Soviet law. Unlike many samizdat journals, “Obchestvennye problemy” had a series of more or less constant sections, such as “General Issues”, “Law”, “Documents of judicial practice” and published not only texts originally produced in Russian, but also translations. The circle of authors who publicized their works through the journal included G. Pomerantz, A. Volpin, V.Chalidze., D.Kolyadickaja., Ju. Telesin, B. Zukerman, A. Tverdohlebov. Altogether 15 issues were produced; publication of the journal stopped with emigration of the editor in 1972. The title alternates: 1969 no. 1 and 1969 no. 2 are entitled SBORNIK IZBRANNYH TEKSTOV SAMIZDATA, POSVIACHENNYH OBCHESTVENNYM PROBLEMAM, while 1970 no. 4 and subsequent issues Obchestvennye problemy: sbornik izbrannyh tekstov Samizdata. This particular issue which I have uploaded into PA was, according to RFE/RL bibliosheet, to appear in N.Y. (as part of the Rigerman project) and in a special issue of Revue des Droits de L'Homme/Human Rights Journal, Paris (AC 657, AC 659). Issue is reviewed in the Chronicle of Current Events, no. 17. For more information on the journal see annotation in Antologia Samizdata, available on-line at http://antology.igrunov.ru/70-s/periodicals/problems/ (in Russian). Due to limited space of the shoe box, I have uploaded it in two parts. This is part 1.
Yes, I know that she works at OSA. I am wondering if she can OCR this long Russian text.
As I know, none of her texts OCRed well. OCR is rather spotty on jpg at this point. We have seen it work on Russian texts in TIF format though. If you have a chance, give us an idea in your survey how well the OCR went for you...which documents produced particularly good or bad text and the file format, quality, and or language of these.

Yes, Olga works on the Samizdat Text Corpora project here at the OSA. I believe that she "lifted" this description from her database...but it looks like maybe she also did additional research. I think it is unfortunate that she had to split up her documents into two parts due to limitations in the system temporary storage. We will work on that!
